Learning to Kayak fish in the Keys has been learning experience. Each time you go out you learn something new. This is my 3rd trip. The first trip I ended up flipping the kayak about 1/2 mile offshore. My dry bags and camel pack kept everything dry. The seat came off and I went in. Lost sunglasses and brand new Penn inshore combo. Had back up sunglasses. Tip is always keep a back up pair on the kayak. I did not start using the noodle floats on the rod until the trip after this but since I only had one fishing rod the chances of losing it were low. This trip was marked with beautiful winter weather but it made the fishing tougher. We found a great spot to launch the kayaks back in Cudjoe key somewhere. Rocky area but the kayak had no problem. We got some live bait but keeper snapper were no where to be found. Used chum in spots with squid once the live bait was gone. The bridge had the most action. Barracuda, lane snapper and mangroves. My buddy was exhausted by the time we headed back. Total trip was over 5 miles. The pedal drive is the only way to go. The weather was amazing.
