China built the best Su-27 but failed? The story of the J-11D fighter jet, possibly the best Su-27

The Chinese J-11D fighter is likely the best single seat Su-27 fighter in the world. It was initially planned to deploy to the Chinese Air Force, with state-of-the-art Active Electronic Scan Array radar in a visually unique radar dome, and more composite lightweight structure than the original J-11 or Su-27. The radar dome&unique appearance makes the J-11D stand out visually. The J-11D was designed to have more lightweight composite materials, but in the end less surfaces were upgraded. The J-11D suffered some development issues. The result is the Chinese Air Force postponed this project, focusing on the J-20 stealth fighter, and the coming mid size J-35 stealth fighter, and upgrading existing J-11 fighters as an alternative.
