D Day was a huge aerial, amphibious, and tactical assault upon the coast of France in and around Normandy. Omaha Beach, the most heavily defended beach was assigned to be taken by the Americans. The naval and aerial bombardments failed to destroy the Atlantic Wall fortifications, which combined with the lack of tanks set up Omaha to be the most deadliest beach of Operation Neptune.
