Original Tunes: Johnnie Walker Radio 1 Session (Mono) + original single mix. Personnel • Robert Calvert – vocals • Dave Brock – guitar, vocals • Nik Turner – saxophone, flute, vocals • Lemmy Kilmister – bass guitar, vocals • Dik Mik (Michael Davies) – Synthesizer • Del Dettmar – Synthesizer • Simon King – drums The writing credit on the single is Robert Calvert and Sylvia MacManus. MacManus was Dave Brock’s then wife Sylvia whose name Brock used in order to put pressure on his publishing company to improve his deal. The lyrics were written by Robert Calvert and he sang the lead vocal on the original live recording. However, the vocals were considered too weak for the single release so they were re-recorded in the studio. Lemmy did the studio vocals. The lyrics are a send-up of space travel, inspired by the Alfred Jarry essay How to Construct a Time Machine which Calvert interpreted as a description of how to build a bicycle: Lyrics I, I just took a ride in a silver machine And I&still feeling mean Do you want to ride See yourself going by The other side of the sky I&got a silver machine It flies Sideways through time It&an electric line To your zodiac sign I&got a silver machine I&got a silver machine I&got a silver machine It flies out of a dream It&antiseptically clean You&gonna know where I&been Do you want to ride See yourself going by The other side of the sky I&got a silver machine I said I just took a ride In a silver machine And I&still feeling mean It flies...
