The B.M.D-4M airborne combat vehicle is an improved version of the B.M.D-4. It has new chassis and a number of improvements over its predecessor. The BMD-4M was revealed in 2008. The first batch of 8 vehicles was delivered to the Russian air assault divisions in 2014. The BMD-4M was officially adopted in 2016. In 2018 a larger batch of 132 vehicles was ordered for delivery in 2018 -2020. This combat vehicle is also proposed for export customers. By 2020 Russian military obtained around 200 of these armored vehicles. This armored vehicle was specially designed for airborne troops. This vehicle is lightly armored but is heavily armed. The B.M.D-4M can be paradropped from medium military cargo aircraft. Once on the ground it acts as an armored transport vehicle and provides fire support for airborne troops. This airborne combat vehicle has a relatively thin armor due to strict weight requirements. It provides protection only from small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. The B.M.D-4M can be fitted with add-on armor kit for improved protection. Vehicle is also equipped with NBC protection and automatic fire suppression systems. The B.M.D-4M has light armor, however its powerful weapons give a good chance to engage enemy armored vehicles. The main emphasis is stressed on direct fire support, rather than protection.
