Difference Between Grizzly Bears, Brown Bears, and Kodiak Bears - Alaska Bears

Many visitors to the 49th state have questions about the mighty bears of Alaska, including, “Are brown bears the same as grizzly bears? Is a Kodiak bear a grizzly bear? As Alaska wildlife biologists point out, grizzly bears, coastal brown bears, and Kodiak bears are all the same species, Ursus arctos.
