Many visitors to the 49th state have questions about the mighty bears of Alaska, including, “Are brown bears the same as grizzly bears? Is a Kodiak bear a grizzly bear? Is a brown bear bigger than a grizzly? Are polar bears bigger than grizzly bears? What do bears eat? As Alaska wildlife biologists point out, grizzly bears, coastal brown bears, and Kodiak bears are all the same species, Ursus arctos. But the grizzly bear, Ursus arctos horribilis, as well as the Kodiak bear, Ursus arctos middendorffi, are considered separate subspecies of which there are some differences.
