Blues collection Koko Taylor & Her Blues Machine Chicago Blues Festival 1988 Koko Taylor (September 28, 1928 - June 3, 2009) was an American blues and R&B singer, popularly known as the "Queen of the Blues". She was initially known for her strong, powerful vocals and traditional blues style. Life and Career Born Cora Walton in Shelby County, Tennessee, Taylor was the daughter of a sharecropper. She left Memphis for Chicago, Illinois in 1952 with her truck driver husband Robert "Pops" Taylor. In the 1950s, she began singing in blues clubs in Chicago. She was selected by Willie Dixon in 1962, who led to bigger performances and her first recording contract. In 1965, Taylor signed to Chess Records where she recorded "Wang dang doodle", a song written by Willie Dixon and recorded by Howlin Wolf five years earlier. The song became a hit, reaching number four on the R&B charts in 1966, and selling one million copies. Taylor has recorded a few versions of "Wang dang doodle" over the years, including a live version in 1967 with harmonica player Little Walter and guitarist Hound Dog Taylor at the American Folk Blues Festival. She subsequently recorded some more material, originals and covers, but never repeated her initial success. Taylor died on June 3, 2009, following complications from surgery for gastrointestinal bleeding on May 19, 2009. His last performance was at the Blues Music Awards on May 7, 2009.
