November 12, 2001 The Airbus A300B4-605R airliner of American Airlines was making a scheduled flight AA587 on the route New York-Santo Domingo, but 1 minute and 46 seconds after takeoff it hit the satellite trail from another aircraft and its vertical tail stabilizer broke off. An out-of-control airliner crashed into a residential area in New York. 265 people were killed — all 260 people (251 passengers and 9 crew members) on the plane and 5 on the ground.
