[Video 8.5] Unit 8, BBC Culture, Exercises 4 and 5 A famous robbery, Part 1 In April 2015, just before the long Easter weekend, London’s most famous jewellery vault was robbed in a spectacular operation. It seemed like something from a film. Professional robbers stole millions of pounds worth of diamonds from safe deposit boxes which were kept in the vault. The vault in central London’s well-known jewellery quarter is called the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Company. It was opened in the 1950s and had an underground vault which was used by local diamond dealers to store their jewels. It was considered one of the safest in the country. On Thursday 2 April 2015, at 21.19, the operation started. The robbers disconnected all the CCTV cameras except one. At 21.23, one robber appeared with a large black sack, but his face was hidden from the camera. The first challenge was how to get into the vault, which was located in the basement. The robbers had crucial information about this building and worked out that if they could climb down inside the lift, they could eventually enter the vault. They climbed down the inside of the lift using ropes. Then they forced open this security door from the lift. Now they were just one step away from the security boxes with the jewels inside. On the streets above, no one knew that one of the biggest ever robberies was happening. It was now twenty past midnight, just three hours after the start of the operation.
