Overall Rating: Good A 1995 Volvo 850 was crash tested on February 7, 1995 into a fixed, deformable barrier at 40.2 mi/h (64.7 km/h) and 41 percent overlap on the driver side. A Hybrid III 50th percentile male dummy was positioned in the driver&seat according to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with the dummy&left foot placed on the footrest. The dummy was equipped with instrumented lower legs that included feet that were modified to include two accelerometers and to have a 45 degree dorsiflexion range. The occupant compartment of the Volvo 850 sustained a moderate amount of deformation with substantial footwell intrusion. The A-pillar was driven rearward, and the driver side door sill and roof rail buckled resulting in the driver door shortening 7 cm as measured at the bottom of the door window. The lower instrument panel in front of the driver moved rearward 7-8 cm, and the measured resultant intrusion in the toepan area ranged from 20 to 32 cm. The toepan intrusion, which was concentrated in the center, caused a folding together of the toepan and the center tunnel. The brake pedal arm was found contacting the lower end of the steering column and was displaced 15 cm rearward and 6 cm above its initial position. All doors remained closed during the test and could be opened without the use of tools after the test; however, considerable effort was required to open the driver door.
