How Old Fashioned CD-rom drives supported audio cd playback

I recently bought a Sega Mega CD. One of it&features aside from beeing a CD-rom drive is audio cd playback. That got me thinking about CD-rom games from the mid 90&where audio tracks where used that you could play in a regular CD-player. How was the audio playback handled back then and how is it done nowerdays? It&pretty different. Let&find out.
