W.C. Handy (1873-1956) was a highly successful bandleader and songwriter in the era World War I, and this piece, "St. Louis Blues" is the most popular and most recorded jazz standard written before the 1920s, and indeed everybody had a go at it from jazz legends like Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Gil Evans, and Dave Brubeck, to blues musicians like Django Reinhardt, to pop musicians like Guy Lombardo. Handy was particularly proud to have snuck a tango rhythm into the introduction. I would love to do this arrangement on recorders an octave down because I think it would be grittier. Anybody have a contrabass that I can have? Hm? Didn&think so. Ah well.
