With my friends from the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul in Coxim (UEMS) and the State Environmental Agency (IMASUL) I was lucky enough to explore a river and waterfall near the town of Sonora, in the north of Mato Grosso do Sul state, western Brazil. The river plunged over a great waterfall. In this upstream section we found tetras, killifish and loricariids as well as a number of aquatic and semiaquatic plant species. Below and behind the waterfall, we explored a magical spray zone. Here, Darter characins, Loricariids and Pimelodids were found among the boulders and sand beds. We did not have the equipment available at the time to properly collect and ID species, so I have given suggestions for several species only to family level.
