The Battle of Amiens, also referred to as the Third Battle of Picardy, began on the 8th of August, 1918 and would be the starting point of the 100 days offensive. The objective of this battle was to force the German army from the Saint-Mihiel salient, which was captured several months before during Operation Michael. An Allied force consisting of British , Australian, Canadian, French and American divisions, with the support of tanks and aircraft, would advance over 11 kilometres or 7 miles on the first day, making it one of the greatest land gains of the war. With the heavy losses of land and men, combined with low morale, a large number of the German armed forces surrendered to the Allies. Erich Ludendorff would later describe the first day of the battle as "The black day of the German Army". Special thank goes out to my sister Georgia for managing to send me this film.
