Today, we’re going to be comparing the Kawai CA58 and the Roland DP603, two instruments with quite different offerings but available for a very similar price point. We’re going to focus on both similarities and major differences, and of course, allow you to hear them played side-by-side. Tone Engine and Sound: The DP603 takes some different pieces of technology that Roland actually implements in several of their higher priced models, such as the HP and LX lines, and squeezes it into a compact, contemporary cabinet, resulting in an instrument of pretty amazing value. Something that immediately stands out is the sheer quantity of sounds the DP603 offers, with over 300 in total. The CA58 boasts a little more speaker power at 100 watts, fed through 2 main speakers found underneath the piano facing the ground, and 2 tweeters up along the top of the piano. The CA58 has a much smaller selection of sounds, with 42 on-board sounds, and less polyphony at 256 notes. The CA58’s Harmonic Imaging XL draws on the Shigeru Kawai EX multidimensionally sampled sample set, which really captures the dynamic sound of the Shigeru Kawai EX quite well.
