(c)2017 Agave americana is the most common Agave plant in this area of Zone 10. It is said to be native to Mexico but there are over 200 known types of the Agave plant. One thing seem to be typical of most of the Agave plants and similar plants to the agave in the way that it flowers. The Agave flowers after a few years or in some types a few seasons and produces flowers that shoot up from a mast like pole. After it flowers, it dies, and many new agave plants are self* propagated underneath the plant. Years ago I found out we drink Agave nectar as a sweet syrup but much of the plant is said to be eatable. The sap is said to cause boils on skin due to acidity but there are other skin problems that may be associated with touching the Agave plants. Another use of the agave is to save and dry the "mast" that the flowers are on to create a didgeridoo! If I find more uses that work well we will post them here for your review as well.
