Have you ever wondered, where did SANTA CLAUS come from, or what inspired Santa’s outfit? This Christmas video from History Calling will not just answer those question, it will deal with many other burning issues surrounding this famous Christmas character, including why does Santa have reindeer? What did Santa look like in historical images? How can Santa fit down a chimney? Is Santa dressed like a coke bottle and if not, then why does Santa wear red and white? Starting with the history of Saint Nicholas, the fourth century Christian saint who was the ultimate inspiration for Santa Claus, we’ll trace the evolution of this figure through centuries of tradition, from ancient Turkey to medieval and early-modern Europe and ultimately modern America to learn who was the real Santa Claus and show how he went from Saint to Santa. It’s a story that involves tomb raiding, the theft of a Saint’s bones, various name changes, from Saint Nicholas to Sinter Klaas to Kris Kringle and Father Christmas. We’ll look at famous depictions and descriptions of Santa, including the poem ‘The Night before Christmas’ and learn about the origins of the reindeer (including Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer), the sleigh and the elves.
