The Latin text is first documented in the Psalteriolum Cantionum Catholicarum – published in Germany in 1710, whereas the tune most familiar in the English-speaking world has its origins in 15th-century France. A copy of the manuscript resides in the National Library of France. Latin Translation: 1. O Come Emanuel, redeem captive Israle that into exile has gone, away from God’s son. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emanuel will come to Israel. 2. O come O Jesse’s branch, from every foe deliver them. Trust in your power to save grant victory over the grave. 3. Come, O dayspring pour on your souls healing light. Dispel the nights nebulous, disperse the tombs shadows. 4. Come, key of David, the heavenly home open side, safely lead us to heaven, bar the way to hell. 5.
