This video describes how to check a footprint assigned to a switching regulator by Kicad. It is based on the first part of a blog Kicad Tutorial 1.10: Assign Footprints to Switching Regulator and MOSFET Transistor that can be found here: The next symbol 14 which is U1 - LTC1624CS8. KiCad has allocated the footprint Package_SO:SOIC-8_3.9x4.9mm_P1.27mm. SOIC is a Small Outline Integrated Circuit which is surface mounted. The 8 indicates it has 8 pins. 3.9x4.9mm indicates that the IC has a horizontal body width of 3.9mm and a vertical length of 4.9mm. P1.27mm means the pin spacing is 1.27mm. We download the datasheet from Linear Technology. You can find it by clicking on the link below. It is a high-efficiency SO-8 N-channel switching regulator controller. The dimensions of the as set out in the package description of the LTC1624 is then compared with the footprint allocated by Kicad. They are found to comply, and the footprint is therefore suitable.
