Jean - Baptiste Arban (1825 - 1889) - Fantaisie and Variations on a Cavatina from Bellini’s ‘Beatrice di Tenda’ Matilda Lloyd - trumpet D Britten Sinfonia Rumon Gamba - conductor release; Casta Diva, Operatic Arias arranged for trumpet, 2023 The standing which Bellini enjoyed as perhaps the supreme melodist of the bel canto period – a talent later acknowledged by Wagner as he sought to develop his own unique approach to melody – is witnessed again in Arban’s Variations on Beatrice di Tenda. Drawing on the final section of Beatrice’s Act I entrance aria – ‘Ah! la pena in lor piombò’ – the variations put the performer through a variety of demanding tests in triplets, repeated notes, scales, and leaps. They also reveal once again the wide expressive scope of the trumpet – its piercing tone suitable both for military heroism and the most tender expressions of intimacy, whether on or off the operatic stage.
