Tumbalalaika is a Russian Jewish folk and love song in the Yiddish language. “Tum” is the Yiddish word for noise and a “balalaika” is a stringed musical instrument of Russian origin. This is from our Rosh Hashanah service. The man, Hank (the Tank) Brodt is a survivor of 5 Nazi Concentration camps. He was our Book of the New Year honoree. He has been a wonderful Holocaust educator since coming to Greensboro ten years ago. The woman is our Emily Siar, a graduate student in voice at Eastman. She has been singing serious Jewish music at our High Holy Day services and other venues (including the symphony) since she was 11! She is now 25 and is making a name for herself as an up and coming opera singer. The performance was done without a formal rehearsal. Their neshamot simply blended together!
