Nikolai Igumnov, a Russian merchant, philanthropist and co-owner of the Large Yaroslavl Manufacturing and trade Co. with gold mines in Siberia. Igumnov gave the commission of building the houser to the city architect of Yaroslavl, N. Pozdeev, . In 1893, the architect died of tuberculosis and the construction was completed by his brother. The walls of the mansion were made of red brick, the tiles were decorated with multicolour mosaics imported from Holland, with Moscow white stone . The decorative tiles were ordered from the Kuznetsov factory.... Nikolai Igumnov built his mansion to show off his wealth and become accepted in "high society".
