We’d like to thank Yamaha for sending us this pre-release unit to evaluate their new successor to their longtime student flute the YFL-221. The new flute has a new look for sure! Yamaha’s standard level flute now features French pointed key-arms. The theory here is that by applying pressure directly to the center of the key the key will have a better seal, whereas on the older model utilized Y-arms which apply pressure from the edge of the key. We invited professional flute player Julie Donato to join us at our studio to play the flute and give her thoughts on the new unit. In her notes she said the two twenty two is a very free blowing flute. A trait that is terrific for young musicians or adults that are new to the flute. She also noted it has an incredibly even tone throughout the range and is easy to play in any register. This is important because it helps build confidence for younger students.
