In 2017, a research team led by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) used Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and towed cameras to survey the biodiversity and geology of the Great Australian Bight at depths between 946–3258 meters. During their survey, the research team recorded several minutes of footage of bigfin squid (genus Magnapinna and family Magnapinnidae) in the water column. These records represent the first observations of bigfin squid in Australian waters and more than double the visual records of Magnapinna squid recorded worldwide. The observations were summarized in an open-access paper published in PLOS One on November 11, 2020. Three of the ROV videos provided in the data files related to that paper have been compiled here. Multiple observations of Bigfin Squid (Magnapinna sp.) in the Great Australian Bight reveal distribution patterns, morphological characteristics, and rarely seen behaviour.
