You’ve been practicing for your interview non-stop doing everything from researching the company to preparing for common interview questions. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret, what you do in an interview is almost as important as what you say. Look out for these non-verbal cues that could help you or hurt you when you’re interviewing for a job. Handshake A great handshake could be your first impression with the employer so make sure you start the interview off on the right foot. We know interviews can make people a bit nervous so don’t walk in with a case of the sweaty palms. Eye contact This is a common job interview mistake. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer, not in a creepy way of course. It allows them to see you are focused and attentive. Crossed arms A positive attitude goes far in an interview. Although you may cross your arms unknowingly, it may come across as guarded and defensive. Rest your arms on the chair or in your lap so that you look comfortable and approachable. Smiling An interview is the perfect time to show off your personality to the employer. A smile is a simple way to instantly be more likable and friendly.
