The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States of America, which superseded the Articles of Confederation in 1789. It is the oldest and longest-standing written and codified national constitution in force in the world. The current Constitution is composed of the Preamble, seven articles, and 27 amendments, with the first 10 amendments known as the Bill of Rights. It defines the principal organs of government and their jurisdictions, as well as the basic rights of citizens. The Constitution is flexible and allows for changes in the government. It is often called the supreme law of the land, and no law may be passed that contradicts its principles. This video covers the original 1787 edition. For a link to the original Bill of Rights, look for the link at the end of this video.
