Mixed Emotions is about the bumpy courtship of a New York widow and widower. Herman Lewis (a Jewish carpet dealer) and Christine Millman (an interior decorator and lapsed Catholic) have been friends for more than thirty years. When their respective mates were alive, the two couples saw each other constantly and often travelled together. As the play opens, Christine is preparing to move – tomorrow – from her apartment in New York City to Florida, where she will share an apartment with another widow. As the books and furniture go out the door, romance rears its embattled head. From out of the blue, Herman appears to request that she stay in the city and marry him. Christine thinks the idea is ridiculous, but Herman persists, reliving old times and tries to change her mind. The play&other characters are Ralph and Chuck, moving men who empty Christine&home, piece by piece, while Herman doggedly pursues his courtship. (Throw out the moving men and it&really a two-character work.) The play was originally produced as &You&in Los Angeles, Toronto, Miami and Kansas City and Chicago. It played the Melrose Theatre in Los Angeles in 1987 and received the Dramalogue Award for best play. Mixed Emotions debuted in in 1993 at the John Golden Theater on Broadway in New York City. It has been performed around the world, including in Australia and Eastern Europe, and remains a popular choice for community theatre productions. Richard Baer (1928-2008) was an American writer and screenwriter.
