Continuing the basic story of the first Risen game, but set some time later, things have become bleak. Players play the usual Nameless Hero (common to games by Piranha Bytes), equipped with a sword and pistol, ordered to go undercover as a pirate. Attributes include Blades, Firearms, Toughness, Cunning, and Voodoo, with three talents and many skills in each, allowing for a wide variety of character customization. (There is no facial, body type, or otherwise physical customization, however.) A kraken has been spotted attacking ships as they head for Caldera, destroying any who approach. Commandant Carlos sends you on a mission to retrieve a magical artifact known as the Titan Harpoon, which is supposed to be able to defeat the kraken, not to mention the titans themselves.
