The tritone substitution: in any 5 to 1 chord progression (here, a 2 5 1), you can replace the 5, which is a 7 chord, by another seven chord, which is exactly 6 semi tones below (or higher than) the first one. You cana see that the third and the seventh are still there after this tritonic subsitution, whch is why this is allowed: the 3rd and the 7th are what makes the 7 chord a.. 7 chord haha. Here, in this particular example: On some bars, I replace the G7 by a bD7, which is exactly 6 smi tones below the G7. To be fair, I play a D9, a G13 (or a bD7 with alterations) ,and a C9. This chord creates a lot of tension , which resolves nicely on the 1 chord. You can see that I only change the bass on my left hand when doing the tritone substitution: it works, and makes it quite easy to use! :)
