This is a hard drive converted to a POV (persistence of vision) display. It uses a 16 segment character format to display numbers, text, and other symbols. Silhouettes of each of the 16 segments are cut out of the hard drive platter. They are backlit at the right timing to display characters. There are 16 sets of backlight LEDs so it is capable of displaying 16 characters at a time. The LEDs are controlled by an ARM processor on the Tiva C Launchpad evaluation board. An optical sensor is used as a tachometer to get the correct timing. I am an Electrical Engineering student and this was my final project for my Microcontroller Hardware and Software class.
