Por una cabeza is a Argentinian tango song written in 1935 with music by Carlos Gardel and lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera. The name is a Spanish horse-racing phrase meaning "by a head", which refers to a horse winning a race narrowly - by just the length of its head. The lyrics speak of a compulsive horse-track gambler who compares his addiction for horses with his attraction to women. Alfredo Le Pera was an Argentine, born in Brazil, son of Italian immigrants. La Cumparsita (little street procession, a grammatical diminutive of la comparsa) is a tango written in 1916 by the Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez, with lyrics by Pascual Contursi and Enrique Pedro Maroni. It is among the most famous and recognizable tangos of all time. La cumparsita was first played in public in the old Café La Giralda in Montevideo. Adiós muchachos is a 1927 tango composed by Argentinian pianist Julio César Sanders and Argentinian poet César Vedani. Sanders was inspired when after a night out with a group of friends in Buenos Aires, one of them said goodbye with the words "Adiós, muchachos". Sanders then developed it further with his piano and his friend Vedani adapted a "little text" to the incidentally conceived music.
