Fractal Composition

This project was inspired by fractal geometry. The Idea was to create a musical composition that implemented the formula developed by Mandelbrot. I accomplished this by taking a beat that I created and splitting it half multiple times into distinct sections as the song progresses. I started with 104 bars, and split it into 52, and then to 26, and so on. Each section transitions either by additional instrumentation or changing the beat completely. I chose fractals because I’m intrigued by it. The fact that there is an equation that can measure something as rugged as a coastline and explain structures of nature and how they’re formed captivates me. It has also led to various scientific and technological breakthroughs, one being computer generated graphics and animation which I can appreciate as a gamer. When people listen to my song, I want them to hear the mellow beat and the sounds of nature as they reflect on the fact that is was inspired by math. Math Is a part of nature, as well as everything we see and do. The use of math in our daily lives can be so natural at times that we don’t realize how often we apply it. It’s a vital part of our existence and the more we understand it, the more we grow creatively.
