The Science of Sight
Manufacturer: Carl Zeiss, Oberkochen (Germany) Application: Civil Era: 1970s Magnification: 8x Objective Lens Size: 30mm Field of View: 7.4° - 130m at 1000m Specifics: In 1964, the Carl Zeiss company (Oberkochen) began manufacturing binoculars with Schmidt prisms. A Schmidt prism consists of two partial prisms separated by an air gap. The Schmidt prisms deflect the light beam six times. The beam path is therefore angled quite far. This results in a shorter overall length. The binoculars of this type, known as Dialyt models, were not manufactured in Oberkochen but in Wetzlar. The first binoculars of this type, which were manufactured from 1964 to 1969, were a bit larger (13,5cm) and a bit heavier (650grams) than the successor models (10,8cm/550grams), which also carry the additional designation "kurz" (short). The short version, which can also be seen in this video, was manufactured in different variants from 1969 onwards. The version shown here has additional rubber armor and was made after 1972 due to the "ZEISS"-Logo which replaced the older "Carl Zeiss"-Logo in 1972. In the first versions of this type, the dioptre adjustment and focusing were still on the side of the eyepiece as a double setting wheel. In later versions, the diopter adjustment was moved to the objective lens side, similar to the Trinovid models from Leitz.
