As implied by the name, the Northwestern Federal District (or Се́веро-За́падный федера́льный о́круг in Russian) is located in the northwestern corner of Russia, bordering on countries including Poland, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Finland, and a little piece of Norway. With a population of nearly fourteen million, the Northwestern Federal District is home to close to fourteen percent of the entire country of Russia. The federal subjects comprising the Northwestern Federal District are as follows: Kaliningrad Oblast Pskov Oblast Novgorod Oblast Saint Petersburg Leningrad Oblast Vologda Oblast Republic of Karelia Arkhangelsk Oblast Murmansk Oblast Komi Republic Nenets Autonomous Okrug The Komi Republic is home to an interesting site known as the Seven Strong Men Rock Formations which is located a little ways to the west of the Ural Mountains. Basically this site is a set of seven gigantic and abnormally shaped stone pillars. The tallest of these monoliths is about 130 feet in height. Other names for this site include the Manpupuner (man-pu-pu-nyor) Rock Formations and the Poles of the Komi Republic.
