Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Sega Publisher: Sega Year of Release: 1990 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- After Burner is one of Sega&most iconic coin-ops of all time and, unsurprisingly, Sega brought it, and a slew of their other best IPs to the Sega Genesis on release. I have to say, the conversion is really impressive, far more so than I&have imagined. Given the relatively meagre hardware of the console compared to the arcade board, this is as good a port as you could have wished for. Perhaps the most significant, as well as potentially game-breaking change the developers implemented was the control scheme. Fortunately, the transition from the arcade&flightstick and throttle to Genesis d-pad works well, and there&even the option to invert the controls for those who prefer a more traditional flight experience. The plane&cannons shoot automatically by default, which leaves the player to get on with the business of locking missiles and performing evasive manoeuvres. Although gamers wanting an arcade-perfect recreation of the game would have to wait for the Sega Saturn release, the Genesis release is a great effort. It completely trounces the 8-bit and 16-bit home computer ports many of us played back in the day, and was clear demonstration for the console&future potential.
