No thunder of engines, no signal of their arrival. Only the sound of static electricity crackling beside a whispered rush of displaced air—like the breath of some forgotten god exhaling over a slumbering world. The planet below, verdant and unguarded, offered no resistance. A scattering of outdated satellites circled its equator, transmitting hollow echoes of a civilisation content in its isolation. These were not a people burdened by the ambitions of the stars. They believed in their solitude, believed the heavens to be vast and empty. They were wrong. Catastrophically so.
