Script The Stonehenge is the world&most famous prehistoric monument and one of the UK&biggest tourist attractions. It is believed that Stonehenge was built between 3000 BC to 2000 BC; it makes it 5000 years old! Nowadays there are 93 stones at the Stonehenge site. If a stone has been broken or fragmented it is counted as two stones. Stonehenge originally had up to 165 stones. The biggest stones at Stonehenge weigh about 25 tons and are up to 7 metres tall. Some of the smaller stones weigh up to 4 tons. Nobody knows why Stonehenge was built. Many people believe it was a gathering place for religious ceremonies, others believe that it was used to watch the movement of the moon and the sun. Some scientists believe it was also used for funerals. Bodies were carried along the River Avon and then brought up to Stonehenge for the ceremony. Other people think that it was used as a calendar. Transportation of these heavy stones was very difficult at that time and it is thought that wooden boats helped move them along the river or even primitive sleds were used that were made from tree trunks. Stonehenge is a popular tourist attraction and also hosts special events and ceremonies (for example, winter and summer solstice celebrations). A brand new visitor’s centre was built at Stonehenge in 2013. It welcomes you with a cafe, a ticket office, a shop, a car and a coach park, and a museum.
