GMC used the Google I/O conference to announce that the 2022 GMC HUMMER EV will have “Google Built-In” and will be powered by Android Automotive OS. Android Automotive features Google Assistant voice commands, Google Maps navigation, and the Play Store for third-party apps. Car makers can customize the UI anyway they see fit, while Google handles the underlying OS and functionality. Unlike Android Auto, which is powered by a connected smartphone and merely projected onto the dashboard screen, Android Automotive OS lives in the dashboard and is powered by the vehicle&hardware. In the Hummer&case, that means a 13.4-inch central infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster powered by some seriously beefy silicon. Beyond the Hummer, Google promises that we&see more than 10 vehicles globally powered by Android Automotive OS from Volvo, General Motors and Renault. Android Automotive OS can currently be found powering the dashboards of the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge electric vehicles. GMC didn’t elaborate beyond providing the video above. What do you think this means? Is Google Built In a great feature?
