‘SON FILE’ EXERCISE: &as old as the study of scales is the practicing of the son filé, namely, the long sustained tone, which has served generations of violinists as a medium for the study of tone production and bow control, and which still provides valuable exercise material for the same purpose. What breath control is for the singer - the ability to sing long phrases without having to interrupt them for a new breath - bow control in the long, sustained stroke is for the violinist - the ability to sustain a long tone or musical phrase without having to change the bow.&- Ivan Galamian, &of Violin Playing and Teaching’, Page 103 This exercise is based on Simon Fischer&Basics: ‘300 Exercises and Practice Routines for the Violin’, Ivan Galamian&Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching and the exercises that my teachers used to assign me, which I stubbornly refused to do at the time. Below are the links to the DropBox folder with the PDF exercises for two octave scales for violin and viola. 🤑PDF🤑 ✅ Son Filé - Exercise 5 for Violin: ✅ Son Filé - Exercise 5 for Viola: 💡Remember: 👉 The slower the TEMPO, the better 👉 Stay as close to the bridge as possible 👉 Use full or flat hair, DO NOT tip the stick towards the scroll or the bridge 👉 ALWAYS aim for smooth bow changes (as you can see in my videos, I too struggle with this) 👉 Use every ‘cm’ or ‘in’ of the bow 👉 DO NOT use vibrato, yet. Focus purely on the bow. --- #violatechniques --- Follow Me:
