Bossa nova baby! Played over a drumless track, so all the drums you hear are me. See description for playing and equipment notes… Another fairly easy drum song for beginners. No complicated fills. No speed-demon stuff on the hi-hats or anywhere else. I guess the footwork could be a little tricky, and the snares are not always on the quarter notes, but other than that, not too hard at all. Oh yeah, except for figuring out how to play the computer drum parts! More on that below… So, yeah, the main theme in this song is basically the second measure of a standard bossa nova beat (Search Youtube for “bossa nova drums” and you’ll see what I mean). Kick drum is on 1, 2+, 3, and 4+. Snare is on 2 and 3+. Hi-hat or cymbals (depending which part of the song) are on the quarter notes, 1, 2, 3, 4. If you’re having trouble with the + note timing, I’d suggest slowing the song down and then speeding up as it becomes natural. My favourite part of the song is the hi-hat splashes during the verse (and the computer parts), which you can clearly see in the “foot cam” at the bottom right of the screen. Open on the 1 beat, and close on the 1+. Fight the inclination to close on the full beat 2, as it’s just a short splash. OK, computer stuff. At the beginning, right after the hi-hat and hi-hat stand (or cymbal stand, if you’d prefer) back and forth, the main theme comes in, but at a lower volume and through some kind of filter.
