The Complete Sonatas of Beethoven (Live) Joel Schoenhals, piano Eastern Michigan University Pease Auditorium March 22, 2013 Greg Knollmeyer, video production Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13 "Pathétique" (1798/99) Grave - Allegro di molto e con brio Adagio cantabile Rondo: Allegro One of Beethoven&most famous piano works next to the "Moonlight", this sonata was also immediately popular during Beethoven&life. "Pathétique" refers to pathos or suffering and this work is deserving of its title. The shocking opening begins slowly with an alternation between a cry of pain and sigh of exhaustion. The fiery and wild music that follows is on the edge of being out of control. In another act of extraordinary creativity, Beethoven returns to the Grave throughout the first movement, giving this traditional sonata form an entirely new shape and feeling. The Adagio cantabile that follows is emotionally complex in a way that it is unique to Beethoven - simultaneously loving, tender, mournful, peaceful, and full of regret. A brisk finale rondo contains beautifully sweet themes that contrast with the anxiety of the main theme. The piece ends in a storm, which recalls the energy and spirit of the first movement and ties the entire work together. - Notes by Joel Schoenhals, 2013 Dan Harteau, piano technician Concert Instrument: This performance features Steinway Model D, serial number 213668.
