The jitterbug was a popular dance during World War II. Directions: Stand across from your partner. Put out both hands to hold both hands with your partner. Since one partner uses his left while the other partner uses her right, we will explain what each partner does separately. This basic step has six beats, so you will count to six again and again. The first two steps are slower and each takes up two beats. The second two steps are quicker and each takes up only one beat. Partner 1 Count 1, 2 as you step to the side with your left foot. Count 3, 4 as you step to the side with your right foot. Count 5 as you step back on your left foot. Count 6 as you step on your right foot. Partner 2 Count 1, 2 as you step to the side with your right foot. Count 3, 4 as you step to the side with your left foot. Count 5 as you step back on your right foot. Count 6 as you step on your left foot. This dance is featured in "Our Star-Spangled Story," a U.S. history curriculum from Notgrass History for students in grades 1 to 4.
