This cheerful and absolutely meaningless song is from a popular Soviet cartoon entitled “You just wait!” (“Ну, погоди!”), in which a dumb wolf keeps chasing a very smart and resourceful hare. In one of the episodes, the two main characters sing a New Year song with the hare dressed up as Father Frost and the wolf dressed up as Snow Maiden, Father Frost’s granddaughter. The comic effect is in the fact that the hare sings according to the role of Father Frost while the wolf still sings about the most important thing on his mind, i.e. catching the hare. I would laugh my socks off when I watched it as a kid. For lack of a co-performer, I will have to do all the parts myself. Why the polar bears? For no particular reason.
