DUBSTEP is a genre of electronic dance music that emerged in South London in the early 2000s from reggae, dub, garage and 2-step. In terms of sound, dubstep is characterised by a tempo of around 130-150 beats per minute, a dominant low-frequency &bass with the presence of sonic distortion, and a sparse breakbeat in the background. The music quickly gained various influences - such as electro, jungle and other electronic styles. Dubstep tended to rely on a dark, nocturnal, &vibe, although it underwent significant changes over time. Emerging around the same time as the similarly British Grime, the two styles often influenced each other. Grime, a British form of hip-hop that has similar roots but, unlike the predominantly instrumental dubstep, also incorporates rap. Around the late 2000s, dubstep split into two different trends. The first, a wave in the US, began to incorporate Electro House influences. The initially dark, minimalistic sound of dubstep was gradually replaced, evolving into aggressive Brostep, upbeat Melodic Dubstep and more laid back, downtempo inspired Chillstep. The second wave of post dubstep was centred around the UK, it saw experimentation, variations on the hard dubstep format and an eclectic influence of IDM, Footwork and Techno styles - all coming together in UK Bass.
