Today we’re coming at you from sunny California and the NAMM 2023 convention. We got to spend a lot of time at the Kawai booth and had our very first look at the new Kawai CA401. The CA401 will be replacing the CA49, which was Kawai’s entry point into a console digital piano with a wooden action. Please like, subscribe and hit that notification bell! Overview There was something interesting about the CA49 that we think remains the case here with the CA401; as opposed to feeling like a downgraded version of its older sibling, the new CA501, the CA401 feels more like a suped-up CN201. In that sense, we almost feel like the CA401 would fit under the CN banner as opposed to the CA banner. This isn’t a criticism by any means, just our feeling based on the specs and overall musical impressions. Spec Rundown The CA401 essentially has the same musical brain as the CN201. It does have two extra speakers so the treble presentation is better, but the power behind the speakers is the same as on the 201 with 40 watts of total power. Now, there are a number of notable improvements over the CA49. The 401 now features the new SKEX Competition Grand sample, which serves as the default, core acoustic piano sound.
