Within Temptation, a Dutch symphonic metal band formed in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, has garnered critical acclaim for their unique blend of gothic and symphonic metal. Despite being initially associated with gothic metal, the band describes themselves as an atmospheric melodic symphonic metal/rock group with various influences. The band gained prominence in the Dutch underground scene after the release of their debut album "Enter" in 1997. However, it wasn&until 2001, with the single "Ice Queen" from their second album "Mother Earth," that they achieved mainstream success, reaching No. 2 on the Dutch charts. Their albums "The Silent Force" (2004) and "The Heart of Everything" (2007) further solidified their success, debuting at No. 1 in the Netherlands and expanding their international recognition. Within Temptation continued to explore new musical territories, evident in their fifth studio album, "The Unforgiving" (2011), which was part of a transmedia project featuring a comic book series and short films. Subsequent releases, such as "Hydra" (2014) and "Resist" (2019), showcased the band&willingness to incorporate diverse influences, including collaborations with artists from different genres.
