Nerekhta is a town in Kostroma Oblast Russia Within the framework of administrative divisions, Nerekhta serves as the administrative center of Nerekhtsky District, even though it is not a part of it. As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the town of oblast significance of Nerekhta—an administrative unit with a status equal to that of the districts. As a municipal division, the town of oblast significance of Nerekhta is incorporated within Nerekhtsky Municipal District as Nerekhta Urban Settlement. Railway lines connect the town to Yaroslavl, Kostroma, and Ivanovo Nerechta in Russland in der Oblast Kostroma, etwa 300 km nordostlich von Moskau sowie 46 km sudwestlich von der Gebietshauptstadt Kostroma entfernt. Sie liegt am Fluss Nerechta, einem Nebenfluss des Wolga-Zuflusses Soloniza. Die nachstgelegene Stadt ist Wolgoretschensk, die 34 km ostlich von Nerechta entfernt liegt.
