As Eddy Merckx said: “Don’t buy upgrades, ride up grades”, well I&buying an upgrade to ride up grades. I&been looking for a way to get a lower climbing gear on my monster cross bike for a few years now. I used an 11-36 10sp cassette when I built the bike in 2012 and with a 20t small sprocket up front, that gave me a 15.2" lowest gear. There were a few steep hills on my rides where I felt a lower gear might help. One issue with a non-suspension bike with low volume tires is you need to stay seated while climbing on dirt/gravel to maintain traction. So I find it&nice to be able to sit and spin the pedals at a higher cadence on steep climbs. In my younger days, I could climb anything with my old touring bike with a 40-34 (32") gear. Today I&take all the gear I can get! Since that time, several companies came out with 40t and 42t upgrade kits with the big cog added on and then one of the smaller cogs removed to retain a 10sp cassette. I didn&want to lose one of my often used high gears for when I ride on the road. Finally both SunRace and Interloc Racing Design (IRD) came out with 11-42 10sp cassettes. The SunRace part was significantly lower cost so I went with that cassette. Cassette information: J.A.
