One of the most famous eruptions in the recent history of Iceland occurred on an island in 1973. During a 5 month timespan, a 200 meter or 660 foot high cinder cone was constructed which would later be named Eldfell. This eruption greatly expanded the island, but was only the latest in a series of eruptions to occur on the island of Heimaey. This island is composed of a half dozen vents which built the island in the last 13,000 years.
