I like to use water-based wipe on poly for guitar necks and maple fingerboards because its simple, dependable and much less toxic than some other finishes. It&forgiving and you can build up as thick a coating as you like before sanding back and polishing or buffing out. It¬ susceptible to humidity the way that nitro is. You can also mix it with water-based stains. Min Wax is my preferred brand but it&quite difficult to buy in the UK. In this video I&re-finishing the fingerboard of a lovely old 1970s Antoria LP copy that I recently re-fretted. The original poly was thick and very brittle and had been sprayed over the original frets and as a result, cracked and splintered with every fret lifted. I sanded back and then re-built up the finish using the wipe on poly tinted with a water based amber stain.
